Dental implants; the advantages of permanently fixed false teeth

Dental science is a resource that comes up with new innovations to help us keep our teeth for longer, but often we will lose our molars before their sell by dates. One of the most brilliant ideas to come out of research into dentistry is the Endosteal Implant. This idea was heavily researched in the 1950s in universities all over the world, but the U.K. and Sweden came up trumps with new discoveries. The most important part of the research was the discovery of the natural procedure called Osseointergration; this has led to innovative advances in the knitting of bones that suffer from multiple fractures, and false teeth. To qualify for an implant you need a strong, healthy and wide jaw bone, which many of us have. Tests needed to determine this include x-rays, digital photos and measurements to make the false tooth or teeth. Once the patient is cleared the surgeon will cut into the gum line and insert the implant, this is then fixed to the jaw bone using self tapping screws, in some cases the surgeon will have studs attached to the plate. These are slid into holes drilled in the bone and glued in. The incision is stitched up with micro stitches and left to heal. The bone needs to fuse with the implant and this is where the Osseointergration takes place, it is a natural process that bonds the two together. It can take up to six months to complete this, but once it is complete the next stage can go ahead. The surgeon will now insert studs called abutments into the plate and allow the wound to heal. The worse part is over, and the false tooth can be made and fitted. It is a replica made of ceramic that replaces the original tooth or teeth, and it is now slid onto the abutment and glued into place. It needs no special treatment to keep it in good condition and can be used just like the old tooth was used. Brushing and flossing is done normally as is rinsing, your six monthly check ups will allow your dentist to remove any tartar build up. If the tooth becomes damaged then it can be replaced easily in a few weeks by a new tooth, the old false one is taken off and the new one simply glued in place. The tooth should outlive all your natural ones, making this a great way to have new teeth the most natural way possible.
